How to print text messages from an iPhone

Messages on iPhone has no print button, so every method goes through something else: Photos, a Mac, a computer backup, Shortcuts or an app. Here is what each one puts on paper, and which to use for your chat.

Short answer

To print a few texts, screenshot them and print from Photos with Share › Print. To print a whole conversation, open it in Messages on a Mac and choose File › Print, print it from desktop software that reads an iPhone backup on Windows or Mac, or use an iOS 26 Shortcut or the Text Records app on the iPhone. For a lawyer or court, check that every page shows who sent each message and when, and keep the phone.

Step by step

Pick a tab. Each method lists what it is good for, what it costs and the mistakes that make printouts hard to rely on.

Screenshots

  1. Open the conversation in Messages and tap the name at the top. Note the phone number or email if identity matters.
  2. Scroll to the first message you need and take a screenshot (side button and volume up on Face ID models).
  3. Scroll down, leaving one or two messages from the last screenshot in view, and take the next one. The overlap shows nothing was skipped.
  4. Continue to the end. Do not crop the header, date dividers or bubble edges in your originals.
  5. In Photos, select the screenshots in order and tap Share › Print. Tap No Printer Selected, pick an AirPrint printer on the same Wi-Fi network, and print.
Watch out for
  • Most bubbles show no exact time; only the dividers do.
  • The name at the top comes from Contacts and can be edited by anyone with the phone.
  • Reactions, edits, voice notes and full-size attachments may not show.
Best for
A short exchange, or when how it looked matters
Time
Minutes for a short chat; hours for a long one

Free

Copy into Notes

  1. Touch and hold a message and tap Copy.
  2. Paste it into Notes or Pages and add a heading with the conversation, the date range and the date you copied it.
  3. Add sender and time labels by hand, checking each against the phone.
  4. Print with Share › Print in Notes, or the Print command in Pages.
Watch out for
  • Pasted text loses who sent it and when. Label a hand-built document as a copy, not an original.
Best for
A readable handout of a few lines
Time
Minutes

Free

Messages on a Mac

  1. Sign the Mac in to the same Apple Account and check Messages › Settings › iMessage for Messages in iCloud. Let it finish syncing.
  2. Open the conversation and scroll up until the earliest message you need has loaded.
  3. Choose File › Print, or press ⌘P.
  4. Check every page in the preview for the right range, names, times and photos.
  5. Print, or choose PDF › Save as PDF in the print dialog. Open the PDF and check the first and last messages again.
Watch out for
  • The printout can include only what has loaded. Printing right after opening a years-long chat can leave out older messages.
  • Turning on Messages in iCloud also syncs deletions. Preserve important messages before changing it.
Best for
Long conversations, free, if you have a Mac
Time
Minutes, plus scrolling to load old messages

Windows PC or Mac backup

  1. Install desktop software that reads iPhone backups. The app comparison lists Windows and Mac options and what each prints.
  2. Connect the iPhone with a cable, tap Trust and enter the passcode if asked. Back up the phone with the software, or with the Apple Devices app on Windows or Finder on a Mac if the software reads those backups.
  3. Pick the conversation and, if you need one, a date range.
  4. Turn on any option that shows the time and the phone number or email on every message, and check a sample page before exporting it all.
  5. Export to PDF or print, then check the first and last messages, names and photos against the phone.
Watch out for
  • If the backup is encrypted, you need its password. Apple says there is no way to recover an encrypted backup without it.
  • With Messages in iCloud on, older photos and videos can be stored only in iCloud and left out. Open them on the phone first.
  • Never give a tool your Apple Account password, and avoid any that uploads your messages to its servers.
Best for
Long conversations on Windows, or when timestamps and phone numbers must be on every message
Time
30 minutes or more for the first backup
Cost
Paid desktop software; prices in our comparison

iOS 26 Shortcut

  1. Open Shortcuts and tap +.
  2. Add Find Conversation, then Find Message, and set the conversation and date filters shown on your phone.
  3. Add a preview step (Quick Look) before saving anything.
  4. Add a step that turns the results into text or a document, then save or share it.
  5. Test a short, known date range first and compare it with Messages before running larger batches.
Watch out for
  • Apple names the actions but does not publish which fields they return or how many messages one run can handle.
  • Check any shortcut you download for steps that send data elsewhere.
Best for
iPhone-only, if you are comfortable building a shortcut

How many pages will it be?

Estimated transcript length174pages, plus a cover page

How to print text messages for court

  • Keep the original conversation on the phone. Do not delete or edit it, and set Settings › Apps › Messages › Keep Messages to Forever.
  • Ask what they want first; date range, whole thread or excerpt, paper or PDF.
  • Show who each person is with a phone number or email, not just a contact name.
  • Include a date and time for each message where your method allows.
  • Keep the messages before and after the key part, so nothing is out of context.
  • Number the pages, and check every page break and attachment before you share it.
  • Keep one untouched copy, and note the date, device and method you used.

Limits worth knowing

  • A printout supports what you say about the messages. It does not prove by itself that they are authentic or complete. Courts decide that.
  • No method can print messages that are no longer on the phone, a synced device or a backup.
  • Apple documents the iOS 26 Shortcuts actions by name only. Test them on your own phone before relying on them.

Questions people ask

Is there a print button in Messages on iPhone?

No. Print screenshots or copied text from another app, print the conversation from Messages on a Mac, or use software or an app that makes a PDF of the thread.

How do I print a whole text conversation from my iPhone?

On a Mac, open the conversation in Messages, scroll up until the first message you need has loaded, and choose File › Print. Without a Mac, use desktop backup software on a Windows PC, an iOS 26 Shortcut, or the Text Records app on the iPhone.

How do I print text messages from my iPhone for court?

Use a method that shows the sender and the date and time of each message, keep the messages before and after the key part, number the pages and keep the phone. Ask the lawyer or court what format they want first. See the checklist above and text messages as evidence. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do I print iPhone texts with the date and time?

Messages on a Mac prints time markers between messages; check the preview. For a time beside every message, use desktop backup software with a per-message time option, or an export app such as Text Records.

How do I print texts from my iPhone on a Windows PC?

Windows has no Messages app. Back up the iPhone with desktop software that reads backups and print the conversation from it (compare options), or make the PDF on the iPhone with Text Records and print that from any computer.

How do I send a text from my iPhone to a printer?

Screenshot it, open the screenshot in Photos and tap Share › Print. Tap No Printer Selected and choose an AirPrint printer; the iPhone and printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network.

How do I print just one text message?

Take a screenshot that includes the date divider above it and print it from Photos. Or touch and hold the message, tap Copy, paste it into Notes and print from there, adding who sent it and when.

Can I save an iPhone text conversation as a PDF?

Yes. On a Mac, choose File › Print, then PDF › Save as PDF. Desktop backup software exports PDFs too, and Text Records makes one on the iPhone. See text messages to PDF and how to export iPhone messages.

Is there a free way to print text messages?

Screenshots, copy and paste, an iOS 26 Shortcut and printing from a Mac you already own cost nothing. They take more checking, and screenshots may not show each message's time or the phone number.

How do I print texts from an Android phone?

This page covers iPhone. Android phones use different messaging apps, usually Google Messages or Samsung Messages, and Text Records is iPhone only.

Why are old photos missing from my printout?

With Messages in iCloud, older attachments can stay in iCloud instead of on the phone. Open them on the phone so they download, then print or back up again.
